Brandon's Reflection Week 3

Some questions that I have: How does fungi live despite their habitats being destroyed?

3 thing I learned: Fungi releases spores and they are carried by the wind to other places. moss can grow anywhere, in drains, in forest etc. Moss are like plant and they can produce their own food.

Ideas I agree with: I agree that we should do experiments on different types on fungi and moss.

Week 2 reflection ( Calvin Soh )

What is our topic?
The topic is "How does Weather Condition promotes the growth of fungus/moss."

What do I already know about the topic?
Moss need damp places to grow while fungus needs dry places.

What are the questions I want to ask about this topic?
I want to know which type of environment will the moss and fungus prosper in.

What are the subject/skills I can make use of?
I can use the facts that I learn from biology.

Where can I go to find information for our project?
Nature reserves, books, internet and magazines

What do I want to prepare to tell others about our project?
The most suitable environment to grow moss and fungus.

Week 1 reflection (Calvin Soh)

Mosses are small plants. Though some species are much larger. They commonly grow close together in clumps in damp or shady locations. They do not have flowers or seeds, and their simple leaves cover the thin wiry stems. They use spores. They can also photosynthesize. Unlike fungus which makes food by feeding on dead tissues from other organisms.

Ideas- We can grow them in different containers placed in different areas some hotter and some at cooler places.

learning issues- I would like to learn about what types of weather is better for the moss to grow and what effects does different weather effects have on the moss.

Action plan- We will be using Microsoft powerpoint to record and present the growth of the moss with different types of weather conditions.

Bryan Soh week 2 reflection

What is our topic?
The topic is "How does Weather Condition promotes the growth of fungus/moss."

What do I already know about the topic?
Moss are photosynthetic and fungi are not.

What are the questions I want to ask about this topic?
I want to know what is the best suited environment for the growth of moss and fungus.

What are the subject/skills I can make use of?
I can make use of the knowledge that I have learnt from biology.

Where can I go to find information for our project?
Books, the Internet and the outside.

What do I want to prepare to tell others about our project?
I want to tell people the most suitable environment to cultivate and grow moss and fungi.

Bryan Soh week 1 reflection

Facts-Firstly,moss is not fungus.Even though it has spores, that does not mean that it is a fungus.Even ferns have spores and they are not fungi. The great difference between fungi and moss is that moss are photosynthetic and fungi are not.Moss make their own food from water and C02 just like flowering plants.Fungi, on the other side are saprophytic, meaning that cannot make their own food, they obtain nutrients from dead tissues from other organisms and soil.

Ideas-I think that we should experiment how the weather affects the growth of moss and fungi. We can grow different types of fungi and moss in different types of weather.

Learning Issues-
I would like to learn more about fungi and moss and what type of weather condition would be most suitable for the growth of fungi and moss.

Action Plan- We will be growing different types of fungi and moss in different environments and we will also keep track of the growth of the fungi and moss by creating a table using Microsoft Powerpoint.

Adam Lee Week 2 Reflection

What is our topic?
Our topic is "How does Weather Condition promotes the growth of fungus/moss."

What do I already know about the topic?
I already know that fungus needs to grow in dry and non-humid environment.

What are the questions I want to ask about this topic?
I want to know if the weather really promotes the growth of fungus.

What are the subject/skills I can make use of?
I can use biology to help me in this project.

Where can I go to find information for our project?
Fields with logs fungus or the internet.

What do I want to prepare to tell others about our project?
I want to tell other about the growth of fungus and their suitable environment and weather conditions to live in.

Adam Lee Week 1 Reflection

Facts-
Mosses- are small, soft plants that are typically 1–10 cm (0.4-4 in) tall, though some species are much larger. They commonly grow close together in clumps or mats in damp or shady locations. They do not have flowers or seeds, and their simple leaves cover the thin wiry stems. At certain times mosses produce spore capsules which may appear as beak-like capsules borne aloft on thin stalks.

Moss Life Cycle

Fungus- Although often inconspicuous, fungi occur in every environment on Earth and play very important roles in most ecosystems. Along with bacteria, fungi are the major decomposers in most terrestrial (and some aquatic) ecosystems, and therefore play a critical role in biogeochemical cycles and in many food webs. As decomposers, they play an essential role in nutrient cycling, degrading organic matters to inorganic molecules, which can then re-enter anabolic metabolic pathways in plants or other organisms.

Ideas- I think we should grow fungus in different weather and environment to find out which environment helps the fungus to grow well. We can also try it on different fungus and mosses to find out the results of the different fungus.

Learning Issues- I want to find out more about Ecology. I also want to find out about which environment suits fungus and mosses best. I also want to find out if fungus and mosses can grow in captivity.

Action Plan- We will be growing mosses or fungus in different weather condition and environment to find out which environment and weather condition suits it best. We will also post the condition of it in a powerpoint presentation.
